Operational Domain and Magnetic Compass Adjustment

This course is the 100% digital version, designed for professionals who cannot travel, covering exactly the same technical syllabus as our face-to-face training held in Valencia.

The vulnerability of fleets to potential GNSS signal failures has restored the magnetic compass to its status as the sole reliable backup system. However, safety is not guaranteed by the equipment alone, but by the expertise required to ensure its precise adjustment.

This Online program brings you to the core of vessel operations to acquire the essential proficiency, transforming theory into an immediate and effective technical capability.

Beyond theory, nautical compass adjustment is a critical technical skill required to ensure the integrity and seaworthiness of any vessel. The lack of precise adjustment represents not only a major deficiency during safety inspections and vetting, but also an unacceptable operational negligence. Our Online program equips specialists with the precise skills required to execute timely compass adjustments. It is the professional solution for those seeking to bridge the gap between theoretical calculation and practical execution, ensuring the vessel maintains its heading with absolute precision.

The Safety Standard: Real-World Compass Operation in Professional Navigation

The core objective of this Online program is to empower the deck officer to take full responsibility for the magnetic reliability of the vessel's compass. Understanding the interaction between the steel hull and the Earth's magnetic field is the first step toward mastering the theory of compass deviation. Through this course, you will develop the analytical expertise required to calculate and mitigate the effects of permanent and induced magnetism, ensuring that the heading indicated by your compass is always dependable data.

Compass adjustment in practice consists of balancing the vessel's magnetic forces with those of the Earth's magnetic field. It is a physical procedure where precision is vital. Our objective is to ensure that, through correct in-situ handling, the equipment's performance on a steel hull vessel is technically flawless, achieving a heading stability that ensures safe and reliable navigation under all conditions.

Online Experience, Analytical Expertise, and Technical Management

This high-performance Online program has been designed to transform the theory of magnetism into a strategic management tool for the deck officer. Rather than focusing on academic abstraction, our syllabus breaks down shipboard magnetism into a practical methodology for diagnosis and resolution, structured into three core subjects:

1. Identification and Calculation of Coefficients

To correct the heading, we must first determine the error. It focuses on the exact calculation of coefficients A, B, C, D, and E, indispensable tools for diagnosing the origin of magnetic deviations.

2. Practical Compensation Techniques

The student will learn the strategic use of binnacle correction elements: Transverse and longitudinal magnets for permanent magnetism. Thomson spheres and the Flinders bar to neutralize induced magnetism.

3. Preparation of the Deviation Table

The final phase consists of creating the official certification document: the deviation curve, a mandatory element for the legal and operational safety of the vessel.

Online Training with Authority: The Experience of Captain Alejandro Ros

Excellence in this discipline can only be transmitted through proven trajectories. This course features the direction and mentorship of Merchant Marine Captain Alejandro Ros, certified by the Spanish Government since 1993 (Registration No. 86).

With over 25 years of professional maritime experience, Captain Ros brings a practical vision that theoretical manuals cannot offer. This real knowledge base articulates every lesson, allowing the student not only to move magnets but to diagnose physical problems of the instrument.

"Even if all electronics fail, the officer in command must possess the analog knowledge to guide the vessel to safe harbor."

A Practical and Action-Oriented Methodology

Unlike standard training for officers, which is often densely theoretical, our methodology is based on "know-how" on board.

01

Real practices: Furthermore there are two adjustments recorded on video, one on board my boat in order to adjust the small yachts which do not have gyro and the second on board a tugboat, which has all the correctors in the binnacle. There is the possibility to come to Valencia and make a real practice on board a tugboat with the proper magnets. Additional cost €150*.

02

* Note: Optional real-world practical sessions are held in Valencia and are limited to a maximum of 6 students, guaranteeing personalized attention and direct access the binnacle.

03

Integral maintenance: Students are taught to perform preventive and corrective maintenance of the equipment, ensuring its long-term operability.

Location and Duration

The course is Online.

Duration: 12 hours.

Real Compensations

* Practical compensation on board a tugboat with all technical elements.

Investment

499 €

Includes practices, teaching material, and lecture hours. Does not include optional real-world practice, cost €150 *.

Final Certification

At the end of the course, a diploma is delivered to the students, which guarantees that they have completed it with an official adjuster.

Tools Needed

In order to get the access to the binnacle, you only need a good screw driver and for the spheres, you have to utilize a spanner to loosen the screws and move the spheres in or out. In any case all these tools can be provide on board, but the most important issue is to bring the proper magnets on board, because normally the do not have the same.

Money-Back Guarantee

A full refund of the course fee will be issued if, after attending the first session, you decide it is not for you. No questions asked.

Professional Opportunities and Certification

Holding this certification guarantees high-level technical expertise, a quality that is highly sought-after in the global professional maritime industry. Upon completing the training, the student is positioned as a specialist fully qualified to ensure the accuracy of navigation systems. This course is primarily aimed at:

  • Professionals and Officers from third countries: Where technical competence is required without the need for an official Spanish certification.
  • Spanish Captains and Officers: Who seek to acquire the practical experience not obtained in their academic training.
  • Surveyors and technicians: Wishing to specialize in a high-demand labor niche with low competition.

Important note

Upon completion, an accrediting diploma is issued. Although it lacks official validity in Spain (granted by the administration), it is an extremely high-value asset for international professionals.
