Specialization in Magnetism and Maritime Safety

In the era of digital navigation, the absolute dependence on GNSS signals has generated a critical vulnerability in international fleets. Faced with this scenario, cyber-resilience has become the pillar of safety at sea.

Mastery of maritime magnetism is not just a legacy of nautical tradition, but an indispensable top-level technical competence for any bridge officer. A poorly compensated magnetic compass does not only represent a technical deficiency in a safety inspection; it is an unacceptable risk to the integrity of the vessel. Therefore, training as a Nautical Compass Adjuster arises as a professional response to the shortage of qualified experts capable of performing binnacle adjustment with mathematical precision and tactical rigor.

The Importance of Magnetic Compass Adjustment in Modern Navigation

The primary objective of a technical Online course in compass adjustment is to transform professionals into experts capable of guaranteeing heading reliability under any circumstance. A steel vessel constantly interacts with the Earth's magnetic field, generating permanent and induced magnetism that deviates the needle from its true orientation.

The compass adjustment process seeks to make corrective effects equal and opposite to the vessel's magnetic forces. This not only reduces deviations but eliminates critical issues such as sluggishness and instability, allowing the equipment's performance on a steel ship to resemble that of a non-magnetic vessel.

Training Online Program: From Mathematical Calculation to the Binnacle

This high-level Online program moves away from abstract theory to focus on operational reality. The syllabus is designed to demystify the complexity of magnetism on board through three fundamental pillars:

1. Identification and Calculation of Coefficients

To correct the course, we must first understand the error. Instruction is provided on the precise calculation of coefficients A, B, C, D, and E—essential tools for diagnosing the origin of magnetic deviations.

2. Practical Compensation Techniques

The student will learn the strategic use of binnacle correction elements: Transverse and longitudinal magnets for permanent magnetism. Thomson spheres and the Flinders bar to neutralize induced magnetism.

3. Preparation of the Deviation Table

The final phase consists of creating the official certification document: the deviation curve, a mandatory element for the legal and operational safety of the vessel.

Online Training with Authority: The Experience of Captain Alejandro Ros

Excellence in this discipline can only be transmitted through proven trajectories. This course features the direction and mentorship of Merchant Marine Captain Alejandro Ros, certified by the Spanish Government since 1993 (Registration No. 86).

With over 25 years of professional maritime experience, Captain Ros brings a practical vision that theoretical manuals cannot offer. This real knowledge base articulates every lesson, allowing the student not only to move magnets but to diagnose physical problems of the instrument.

"Even if all electronics fail, the officer in command must possess the analog knowledge to guide the vessel to safe harbor."

An Eminently Practical Approach

Unlike standard training for officers, which is often densely theoretical, our methodology is based on "know-how" on board.

01

Real practices: There is the possibility to come to Valencia and make a real practice on board a tugboat with the proper magnets. Additional cost €150.

02

Online Course: Optional real-world practical sessions are held in Valencia and are limited to a maximum of 6 students, guaranteeing personalized attention and direct access the binnacle.

03

Integral maintenance: Students are taught to perform preventive and corrective maintenance of the equipment, ensuring its long-term operability.

Location and Duration

The course is Online.

Duration: 12 hours.

Real Compensations

Investment

499 €

Includes practices, teaching material, and lecture hours. Does not include optional real-world practice, cost €150.

Final Certification

At the end of the course, a diploma is delivered to the students, which guarantees that they have completed it with an official adjuster.

Tools Needed

In order to get the access to the binnacle, you only need a good screw driver and for the spheres, you have to utilize a spanner to loosen the screws and move the spheres in or out. In any case all these tools can be provide on board, but the most important issue is to bring the proper magnets on board, because normally the do not have the same.

Professional Opportunities and Certification

This course is primarily aimed at:

  • Professionals and Officers from third countries: Where technical competence is required without the need for an official Spanish certification.
  • Spanish Captains and Officers: Who seek to acquire the practical experience not obtained in their academic training.
  • Surveyors and technicians: Wishing to specialize in a high-demand labor niche with low competition.

Important note

Upon completion, an accrediting diploma is issued. Although it lacks official validity in Spain (granted by the administration), it is an extremely high-value asset for international professionals.
